ENGLISH SCHOOL, EARLY 19TH CENTURY Portrait Bust of Julius Caesar The Roman emperor modelled full face, raised on shallow swept socle base, 55.5cm x 43.2cm wide Footnotes: The present picture depicts the portrait bust of Julius Caesar which was acquired by the British Museum from the well-known collector James Millingen (Dutch-English, 1774-1845) in 1818 (Museum number 1818,0110.3). Millingen, was the son of a merchant who became an archaeologist and numismatist, collector of antiquities and supplier to major museums. The British Museum's bust, now thought to date to circa 1800, with its strongly individualised head was, for many years the most famous and widely reproduced portrait of Julius Caesar in Britain.
