ROLEX. A FINE AND RARE STAINLESS STEEL AUTOMATIC CALENDAR BRACELET WATCH Model: GMT-Master Reference: 6542 Date: Purchased 23rd February, 1960 Movement: 25-jewel automatic, No. DN885387 Dial: Black Case: Tonneau form, screw down case back, No. 482893 Strap/Bracelet: Fitted stainless steel Oyster link Buckle/Clasp: Stainless steel folding clasp, signed Signed: Case, dial, and movement Size: 38mm Accompaniments: Maker's outer box, presentation box, certificate, original damaged Bakelite bezel, copy of purchase receipt, original service letters and swing tag Footnotes: Without exaggeration, the GMT-Master is one of the most iconic and interesting Rolex watches with an unique history. The name 'GMT' stands for Greenwich Mean Time. Introduced in 1954, the Reference 6542 was the very first GMT model. Rolex developed this watch based on the Turn-O-Graph Reference 6202, with modifications to the bezel and an updated self-winding movement. These new features allowed Pan-Am pilots to precisely track two different time zones on transatlantic flights by simply rotating the bezel and adjusting the secondary 24-hour hand display. Although the Reference 6542 remained in production for only six years, there were numerous variations of GMT models in later decades. Early versions of the Reference 6542 were fitted with a two-tone Bakelite bezel insert with radium-coated numerals. However, this material was considered radioactive and brittle. Rolex recalled the watches and eventually replaced the bezel inserts with aluminum after two years from the initial releases. Another distinctive feature was the lack of crown guards in the Reference 6542, which were implemented in later GMT models (such as the Reference 1675). The present example of the Reference 6542 is in good condition with a tropical black dial and a replacement bezel insert. The original Bakelite bezel is still present with the watch, despite being damaged as it is impossible to fix once cracked. The watch is accompanied by complete accessories, including the original presentation box, purchase receipts, certificate, and service letters exchanged between the original owner and the Rolex service center. This watch is truly a rarity for collectors and enthusiasts of aviation and travel.
