LONGINES. A RARE STAINLESS STEEL MANUAL WIND FLYBACK CHRONOGRAPH WRISTWATCH Model: Weems Reference: 4826 Date: c. 1940s Movement: 17-jewel manual wind, No. 5769208 Dial: Silvered Case: Round, snap on case back, No. 20361 Strap/Bracelet: Green canvas Buckle/Clasp: Stainless steel buckle Signed: Case, dial, and movement Size: 32.5mm Accompaniments: None Footnotes: The present watch Ref. 4826 is an early example of the Longines Weems military watch. Invented in 1929, the Weems Second Setting system of synchronizing to a known time signal whilst in flight was designed by Professor Philip Van Horn Weems. Weems himself was working for the US Naval Academy in Annapolis when he encountered that slight miscalculations in timekeeping could have catastrophic outcomes. By designing a bi-directional bezel marked 1-60, pilots and other navigators, were able to adjust the watch to a known time signal and make true for their destination.
