PRESENTATION COPY OF BLOOD MERIDIAN FOR ANNIE DELISLE. MCCARTHY, CORMAC. 1933-2023. Blood Meridian Or The Evening Redness in the West. New York: Random House, 1985. 8vo. Publisher's red cloth-backed boards, spine lettered in gilt, original pictorial dust jacket. Light staining to spine, minor chipping to spine ends of jacket, with light stain near lower spine. Provenance: Cormac McCarthy, presentation inscription to Anne [DeLisle]. 'A man's at odds to know his mind cause his mind is aught he has to know it with. He can know his heart, but he don't want to. Rightly so. Best not to look in there.' —from Blood Meridian. FIRST EDITION OF MCCARTHY'S MASTERPIECE, considered among the greatest novels of the 20th century, INSCRIBED by McCarthy to his second wife, 'For Anne / With love / Cormac.' McCarthy began researching Blood Meridian in 1974 while still married to Annie beginning with his initial travels to El Paso. He began writing it in earnest in 1975, while still working on Suttree. Relocating to El Paso, McCarthy continued his work on Blood Meridian with the help of a MacArthur grant in 1981. Like his earlier novels, its publication in 1985 was met with great critical praise, but little money. Over time, however, it has come to be widely considered to be his masterpiece, and one of the most important novels of the late twentieth-century.
