BOURNE, SAMUEL. 1834-1912. 85 photographs of India and environs, most by Samuel Bourne, many with his name and number in image, many added in purple ink, albumen prints, 79 approximately 9 x 12 inches mounted individually, with 6 smaller prints mounted 3 per page on one leaf, some foxing, toning or fading to photos at margins, some foxing to album leaves, some chipping at corners of leaves, housed in large oblong album, worn, spine perished. One of the greatest of the 19th-century travel photographers, Samuel Bourne photographed more than 2500 views of India before he left in 1870, 'constituting the most exhaustive record made in India by a single photographer' (Hambourg, The Waking Dream: Photography's First Century, Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1993).
