ANSON, GEORGE, BARON. 1697-1762. A Voyage Around the World, in the Years MDCCXL, I, II, III, IV. London: For the author, 1749. 4to (245 x 196 mm). [20], 417, [3] pp. Folding map of the world frontispiece, showing California as an island, and 42 copper-engraved maps, charts, views, coastal profiles, etc., almost all folding, binding instructions leaf present. Contemporary calf, gilt titled morocco spine label. Covers and first few leaves detached, covers worn, chart of Phillippins torn and laid in, frontispiece map with minor repair and short closed tears, a few others with short tears to gutter; some toning, a few stray marks to title and first few leaves. Provenance: Thomas Dulton (ownership signature) and Clarence S. Postley (bookplate). Fifth edition, the second edition issued in quarto and on heavy laid paper superior to other editions published the previous year. Anson was successful at pursuing Spanish treasure, but not at preserving the lives of his men; seven of the eight ships that set out were lost. Cox I p 49; Hill p 317. Lot to be sold without reserve.
