A RUTH CUMMINGS SCREENPLAY OF DAYBREAK. CUMMINGS, RUTH, and CYRIL HUME. Mimeographed Manuscript, 'Daybreak by Arthur Schnitzler,' 128 pp, 4to, Culver City, CA, December 17, 1930, bound with brads and housed in goldenrod MGM covers with printed label, stamped 'complete' and 'file copy,' pages toned and thumbed, chipping and loss to wrapper edges, marked 'Hume' in pencil to upper right corner of cover, library stamp to p 1. Daybreak (MGM 1931) was directed by Jacques Feyder and stars Ramon Novarro and Helen Chandler. Based on the novel by Arthur Schnitzler, the film tells the tragic story of a dissolute army officer Willi and the innocent music teacher he falls in love with. Ruth Cummings (1894-1984) was a screen actress (performing under the name Ruth Sinclair) who transitioned to writing after she married producer Irving Cummings in 1917. She was very active during the 1920s, working on films such as The Bridge of San Luis Rey (1929) and the Garbo classic Wild Orchids (1929); less so after the advent of sound.
