A pair of Queen Elizabeth II limed-oak Coronation chairs, 1953 The limed-oak frame upholstered in faded blue velvet, trimmed with gold braid, the backrest embroidered with the ERII cypher, one top rail with applied plaque numbered '133', the other '376', on chamfered square-section legs on spreading block feet, the underside stamped with maker's name 'W. Hands & Son', '1953' and ER cypher, 48.5cm wide, 45cm deep, 84.5cm high (19in wide, 17 1/2in deep, 33in high). (2) Footnotes: The Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was held on 2nd June 1953 at Westminster Abbey. Furniture maker W. Hands and Sons Ltd., based in High Wycombe, were commissioned to make the chairs for Peers and Peeresses. The blue velvet upholstery was made at Listers Mills in Bradford, Yorkshire. After the ceremony those who had occupied the chairs were given the opportunity to buy them. Condition Report Wear, stains, marks and general sun bleaching to upholstery. Losses and wear to braiding. Minor chips, scuffs and scratches. Joints slightly loose. Overall in good condition consistent with age and use. This condition report is provided for convenience only and may not cover factors that a bidder considers important.
