Duncan Grant (British, 1885-1978) The Ugly Sisters Try on the Glass Slipper inscribed 'The artist/Charleston Firle/Sussex' (on a label attached to the stretcher) oil on paper laid to board 50 x 90 cm. (19 5/8 x 35 1/2 in.) Painted circa 1944 Footnotes: Provenance The Artist With Mayor Gallery, London Sale: Sotheby's, London, 22 July 1986, lot 320 Private Collection, Long Island Their sale: Clake Auction, New York, 19 January 2020, lot 25, where acquired by the present owner Exhibited The Encouragement of Music and the Arts (details untraced) Literature John Lehmann (ed), Penguin New Writing, Number 22, Penguin, London, 1944, unnumbered (ill.b&w) This lot is also related to Grant and Bell's Cinderella murals (see lot 33), the present work is held in a painted frame by either Grant or Bell. A similar frame housed Vanessa Bell's study Cinderella Puts on the Shoe, sold in these rooms 14 May 2014. We are grateful to Richard Shone for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
