Jean Hippolyte Marchand (French, 1883-1940) Le Parc, Garsington signed 'J. Marchand' (lower left) oil on canvas 44.8 x 55 cm. (17 5/8 x 21 5/8 in.) Painted circa 1919 Footnotes: Provenance With Crane Kalman Gallery, London With The Court Gallery, West Quantoxhead, where acquired by the present owner Exhibited Probably London, Crane Kalman Gallery, Jean Marchand, 14 June-30 July 1967, cat.no.45 (as Le Parc) The present work dates to Lady Ottoline Morrell's ownership of Garsington Manor, which hosted members of the Bloomsbury Group on many occasions including Lytton Strachey, Aldous Huxley, Virginia Woolf, T.S. Eliot and E.M. Forster. Marchand was at Garsington in summer 1922 with fellow guests including Simon Bussy, Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant. Photographs show Marchand working in the grounds of the house (Lady Ottoline Morrell's Photograph Albums, National Portrait Gallery, London).
