A LATE GOTHIC MADONNA
This beautiful Late Gothic statue of the Assumption of Mary standing on a half-moon is probably the work of Lienhard Astl, a carver who worked in Gmunden in 1505-23. In her left arm she is carrying the Christ Child holding an apple - a symbol of sovereign power. She is dressed in a gold cloak with blue lining and has a crown on her head. The gentle facial features of both figures are framed by the contrasting carved detail of their wavy hair. The statue is in very good condition with the original polychrome painting.
