JOSEF GOČÁR (1880-1945): A CUBIST SOFA
1913, Bohemia, Prague

This sofa comes from the interior of the home of famous Czech historian Julius Glücklich. The Functionalist villa in Prague-Baba (Na Babě 2, Jarní 1798/3), which was designed by Josef Gočár, was built in 1934, but it can be surmised that Professor Glücklich furnished the villa with Gočár pieces he had already owned. Photographs exist documenting the pieces of furniture Josef Gočár had designed in around 1913 and were part of the furnishings of the professor's previous residence.

The sofa on offer here is similar in both shape and upholstery to the sofa featured in the Prague Werkbund's exhibit at the Werkbund exhibition in Cologne in 1914. It also corresponds with the furniture the architect had designed for actor Otto Boleška. The upholstery fabric is original, with a floral motif designed by František Kysela. Published in the catalogue: Český kubismus - architektura a design 1910-1925, pp. 188, 198, 199, 201. Wood, oak veneer, textile. (100 x 210 x 73,5 cm)

Starting price: 600 000 CZK / 22 222 EUR
