Advertising Poster Salem Cigarettes Herbert Leupin
45 GBP
London
Original vintage advertising poster for Salem No. 6 cigarettes produced at the Yenidze cigarette factory in the German city of Dresden, Saxony. The Yenidze Tobacco and Cigarette Factory was founded by the Jewish Entrepreneur Hugo Zietz, who imported tobacco from Ottoman Yenidze, Thrace (modern Genisea, Greece). In 1925 the tobacco company Reemtsma took over the Yenidze and the No. 6, a filterless cigarette was produced until 2016. This poster was designed by well-known Swiss graphic designer Herbert Leupin (1916-1999), known primarily for his poster art and even received an award for his work on Salem No. 6. Leupin worked as an advertising consultant for Reemtsma from 1951-1964 and also designed the famous Milka cow image. This rare and unusually long poster features a handwritten white text set against a deep, cobalt blue colour with a packet of cigarettes at the top in emerald green packaging, as well as a dice landed on the number 6. Leupin made his name in the 1940s through his use of the magic realism style of images for advertising consumer goods. When art critic Franz Roh applied the term magic realism to visual art in 1925, he was designating a style of visual art that brings extreme realism to the depiction of mundane subject matter, revealing an "interior" mystery, rather than imposing external, overtly magical features onto this everyday reality. Condition: Very good condition, minor folds. Country of printing: Germany, designer: Herbert Leupin, size (cm): 240 x 84, year of printing: 1950s.
