Original antique propaganda poster featuring an illustration of Joseph Chamberlain (1836-1914) with a quote above him - If you are going to tax the bread of the people you will affect every household in the land, and you will throw back the working classes of the country to the starvation wages and to the destitution from which Mr. Gladstone and Sir Robert Peel have relieved him - pointing at his later quotes - He must be a very foolish person to imagine that the people of this country will ever again submit to the terrors of the small loaf; and - I believe there never was a greater imposture than the cry of the dear loaf. Published by The Free Trade Union, later known as the Free Trade League, founded in opposition to the campaign for Imperial Preference launched by Board of Trade chairman Joseph Chamberlain in May 1903.
