War Poster WWII Join the ATS Abram Games Blonde Bombshell

Exceedingly rare original vintage World War Two recruiting poster: Join the ATS. Published by Her Majesty's Stationery Office to encourage women to join the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS). This poster was recalled as too glamorous following a complaint by the Parliament member, Thelma Cazalet-Keir. Stylish depiction of a young blonde lady with red lipstick was deamed as not appropriate and posters were recalled and destroyed. This is a rare surviver in a very good condition. It has pinholes indicating that is was displayed and then carefully folded and stored away. The poster was designed by Abram Games (1914-1996) and depicts Doreen Murphy a young woman in the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) who had previously asked Games to design a poster for a dance. He agreed on the condition that she posed for a recruitment poster wearing the new style ATS cap. The resulting poster was nicknamed the blonde bomshell, it was replaced by a more traditional image. Abram Games OBE, RDI (29 July 1914 – 27 August 1996) was a British graphic designer. The style of his work – refined but vigorous compared to the work of contemporaries – has earned him a place in the pantheon of the best of 20th-century graphic designers. In acknowledging his power as a propagandist, he claimed, "I wind the spring and the public, in looking at the poster, will have that spring released in its mind." Because of the length of his career – over six decades – his work is essentially a record of the era's social history. Some of Britain's most iconic images include those by Games. An example is the "Join the ATS" poster of 1941, nicknamed the "blonde bombshell" recruitment poster. His work is recognised for its "striking colour, bold graphic ideas, and beautifully integrated typography".Year of printing: 1941, country of printing: UK, designer: Abram Games, dimensions (cm): 73x48.
