The Shaftesbury Theatre's production of The Entertainer in 1986 was the first West End revival of the play since being first performed in 1957 when Laurence Olivier took the lead role. Hayes' inscription references the legendary summer parties that Osborne hosted at his house Christmas Place in Kent (see lot 85), the invitation being named after Archbishop Thomas Cranmer (see Whitebrook, p. 316).
