The present painting is Scene 10 that closes Act 1 of A Patriot for Me, the scene that marked the beginning of Redl's downfall. Rosoman used the sketches, notes and photographs he had been able to make and take during the week of performances he had attended of the play. According to Tanya Harrod, Rosoman's composition for the present work was also inspired by photographs of menace or attack that he had cut out of The Times and The Observer newspapers (Harrod, p. 120).
