The celebrated staged designer Carl Toms designed the set and costumes for A Patriot for Me staged at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 1983. Directed by Ronald Eyre, the production starred Alan Bates as Redl and Nigel Stock as Baron von Epp.
Toms trained at the Royal College of Art after the War, worked for George Devine at the Old Vic Theatre School and became apprenticed to Oliver Messel in the 1950s. He went on to work regularly for both the English Stage Company and the Royal Shakespeare Company. He was awarded an OBE in 1969, and in 1975 won a Tony Award in America for his production design of Sherlock Holmes. He was also instrumental in overseeing the renovation and restoration of a number of theatres, including the Theatre Royal Windsor, the Theatre Royal Bath and the Richmond Theatre, London.
