Herbert was the daughter of the humorist, writer and politician AP Herbert and his wife Gwendolen and lived most of her life in Hammersmith. She attended classes with André L'Hote in Paris, studied stage design at the Slade, and started at the London Theatre Studio at the age of 19, where she met George Devine. After Devine co-founded the English Stage Company and manager of the Royal Court Theatre Herbert became the company's stage designer of choice and Devine's lover, collaborating on a series of set designs for the company, including Luther and A Patriot for Me by Osborne (see lot 25). After Devine's death in 1966, Herbert's contact with the Royal Court Theatre diminished. Instead she moved her attentions to Laurence Olivier, who had been appointed the first director of the National Theatre in 1962. There she was invited by Olivier to serve on the design committee for the new theatre on London's South Bank whilst also working on numerous plays and films.
