Inadmissable Evidence was first performed at the Royal Court in 1964 (see previous lot) with the young Scottish actor Nicol Williamson in the lead role of Maitland. A film of the play starring Williamson as Maitland with the screenplay by Osborne followed in 1968. Williamson later reprised the role of Maitland on stage when the play returned to the Royal Court in 1978, directed once again by Osborne.

Patrick Procktor (1936 - 2003) was a British artist working in the 60s and 70s both as a painter and printmaker. He was popular within the worlds of music and theatre and designed for record sleeves. Cecil Beaton was among his circle and a portrait of Procktor by the photographer hangs in the National Portrait Gallery.
