black and white still from the musical comedy film with Trevor Howard as the Elderly Handel and John Osborne (unframed); together with a Ladbroke Films 1985 commemorative medallion
(2)

God Rot Tunbridge Wells was a musical comedy film written by John Osborne about the composer Handel in his latter years reflecting on his life and career. It was transmitted on Channel 4 television on 6th April 1985.

'God Rot Tunbridge Wells is a pugnacious exploration of the life of George Frideric Handel, who died at his London home in 1759, shortly after (but not as a consequence of), a dreadful performance of The Messiah by the Tunbridge Wells Amateur Music Club... this was the first time [Osborne] had tackled the life of a composer. It was 'such a pleasure' he declared, as Handel is almost my favourite composer'. (Whitebrook, p. 327).
