The initials D.C. refer to Douglas Cleverdon (1903-1987), the influential publisher and bookseller and later radio producer at the BBC. The first book he published was a collection of engravings by Gill, who later made a Book of Alphabets for Cleverdon. Other artists Cleverdon would collaborate with included David Jones, E.M. Forster, Virginia Woolf, T.S. Eliot and Dylan Thomas.
