PORTRAIT OF A MAN, TRADITIONALLY IDENTIFIED AS JOHN PADBURY
oil on canvas
76.2 x 63.5 cm; 30 x 25in
99.5 x 87.5 cm; 39 x 34 1/2in (framed)

Offered together with a silver medal awarded by the Duke of Norfolk in 1813 to John Padbury, who was a carriage maker from Speenhamland, Berkshire. The medal was earned for the invention of a carriage-wheel guard which retains the wheel safely on the axis to prevent the linch-pin coming out.

Qty: 2

The canvas is not relined. There is a small puncture to the canvas in the lower right part of the waistcoat. And a small paint loss in the lower left corner. There is no retouching evident under ultra-violet light, but there is a fine web of craquelure evident on close examination in the dark background around the figure. The painting would benefit from being cleaned.
